Creativity, Open-Mindedness, Responsibility, and Excellence
Global Citizenship Opportunities at the School Level
Authentic learning also involves reaching out beyond the walls of the school. Students at SFS Elementary School are actively involved in service, leadership and character building opportunities that are endorsed by all divisions. While their service is often related to fund-raising, we are very intentional about connecting students to the communities we support, namely an orphanage in the Philippines and a TB Care Center in North Korea (sponsored by the Eugene Bell Foundation). Classes sponsor orphans in the Philippines and patients in N. Korea. Names and faces make their efforts personal. We collect clothes, school supplies, and integrate project learning to plan fairs and assemblies that will raise awareness for various causes. Faculty delegates are sent to the Philippines and N. Korea annually and return to share their experiences with our young people. These are just two examples; the concept of leading and serving as global citizens is woven throughout the grades and often integrated in developmentally appropriate ways with classroom studies.
